1955…remember the night watchman Claude who faithfully strode the corridors of all three floors of Ball Hall? Claude looked neither right nor left as he checked in at timeclock stations, but once in a while he would let us know ahead of time that a “surprise” fire drill was in the offing. We were prepared to don robes, sturdy shoes, turn on the room lights, put up the roller window shade and exit the building via the stairs. Claude was also in charge of unlocking the front door to admit anyone returning from a date after midnight. He more than once discouraged young men from loitering on the porch after curfew. Ball Hall and its student residents were well protected thanks to vigilant Claude Bentley.
